Marina Matiatou
Associate Lighting Designer
“The light rises and sets, just like our thoughts and emotions.”
Marina Matiatou is an Architect Engineer, holding a Master’s degree in the Restoration of Buildings and Complexes from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). During her studies, she engaged deeply with the research and analysis of historical buildings, ancient monuments, and traditional settlements, demonstrating a particular interest in highlighting their cultural and architectural significance through various means. One of these means is light—natural or artificial—and shadow, as they both contribute to emphasizing texture, materials, and color.
At Edeko Lighting Studio, she has been collaborating with Eleftheria Deko since 2016 on lighting design projects for private and public buildings, as well as their surrounding environments, including residences, museums, hotels, and restaurants. Her work also extends to façade and urban lighting projects that showcase historical buildings and city centers. Notable projects include the lighting design for the new wing of the Athens International Airport (AIA), the new Archaeological Museum of Cyprus, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio, the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina, and Dionysiou Areopagitou Street in the historic center of Athens.
In general, she approaches lighting design as a synthesis of artistic vision and architectural thinking. Light is a design material that reveals form, texture, and atmosphere. Her aim is to achieve a state of visual silence — a balance in which light becomes an integral part of the architecture, subtly enhancing its presence.
